SMSF Wind Up and Closure Services
An SMSF wind up is the formal process of ending a self-managed super fund after its members’ benefits, assets, liabilities, accounting, audit and reporting obligations have been dealt with. Closing a bank account or deciding to stop using the fund is not enough on its own.

When might trustees wind up an SMSF?
Trustees may decide to wind up an SMSF because the fund is no longer practical to manage, members are leaving, trustee capacity has changed, the cost and administration no longer suit the fund, or the members want their benefits transferred to another superannuation arrangement. The decision is personal and can involve financial product considerations outside accounting and tax compliance.
Before acting, trustees should check the trust deed and make sure the proposed wind-up process is consistent with the fund’s governing rules and superannuation law.
Cost & Complexity
The cost, administration, and regulatory obligations no longer suit the size or objectives of the fund.
Changing Trustee Capacity
Trustees relocating overseas, ageing, or preferring to reduce their fiduciary and investment responsibilities.
Member Transitions
Members departing the fund, relationship breakdowns, or consolidating into an Australian APRA-regulated public fund.
Estate Administration
Final distribution of member death benefits following the death of a member/trustee in accordance with the deed.
Governing Trust Deed Prerequisite: Every trust deed specifies exact procedures for fund dissolution, asset realization, and member notifications. Following the deed prevents legal disputes between members and beneficiaries.
What needs to happen before an SMSF can be closed?
The practical order depends on the fund, but trustees generally need to deal with member benefits, investments, liabilities and reporting before the SMSF can be finalized. A fund should not be treated as wound up while it still owns assets or has unresolved obligations.
Check the trust deed and document the trustees’ decision to wind up the fund

Lodge all outstanding returns and the final SMSF annual return
Electronically lodging the final SAR with Section A 'Is the fund wound up?' formally selected as 'Yes'.
Notify relevant parties and retain the required records, including wind-up records, for at least 10 years after lodging the final SMSF annual return
Notifying financial institutions and safeguarding all historical fund, audit, and tax records for at least ten years.
Member benefits must be dealt with correctly
Before the fund is wound up, member benefits need to be paid or rolled over in accordance with superannuation law and the trust deed. The correct treatment depends on each member's circumstances. A member may not simply withdraw preserved super because the SMSF is closing, and liabilities and money owing to the fund need to be dealt with before the final rollover is completed.
Where a member is rolling benefits to another complying super fund, the rollover generally needs to be processed using the applicable Super Stream requirements. Current ATO guidance recommends rolling over most benefits before the final annual return and completing any remaining rollover within 28 days after that return is lodged.Financially Up can assist with the accounting and administrative information needed for closure, while advice about which super fund or financial product a member should use requires an appropriately authorized adviser.
SuperStream Rollovers & 28-Day Post-Lodgement Window
ATO guidance outlines clear timing protocols for finalizing member balances:
- Roll over the vast majority of member balances before lodging the final return
- Retain sufficient cash reserves to cover final tax debts or audit/accounting invoices
- Execute remaining residual balance rollovers within 28 days after return lodgement
Final accounting and SMSF audit
The fund needs final accounts that reflect the disposal or transfer of assets, expenses, member transactions and final balances. Any outstanding annual audits from earlier years should also be completed. The final income year itself must be audited by an approved SMSF auditor before the final SMSF annual return is lodged.
Final SMSF annual return and ATO closure
The trustees must lodge any outstanding annual returns and then lodge the final SMSF annual return with the relevant wind-up information completed. Once the final return is processed, the ATO will cancel the SMSF's ABN and close the fund's records. Trustees should not separately cancel the ABN. The fund bank account should be closed last, after final liabilities are paid, refunds are received, rollovers are completed and the ATO confirms the fund has been wound up.
Once an SMSF is wound up, it cannot simply be reactivated later. If members later want another SMSF, a new fund would need to be established and the relevant establishment requirements considered again.
Fund Bank Account Must Be Closed Last
Never close the SMSF bank account prematurely:
- Receive any remaining tax refunds or dividend imputation credits from the ATO
- Pay all final invoices (statutory audit, accounting fees, supervisory levy)
- Close only once the ATO provides written confirmation of fund de-registration
Winding Up is Irrevocable & Permanent
Once an SMSF is wound up, it cannot simply be reactivated later:
- The fund's ABN and TFN are permanently retired in ATO superannuation registries
- Trustees cannot re-open the closed fund for future contributions or assets
- If members later want an SMSF, a new fund must be formally established from scratch
What about a corporate trustee after the SMSF closes?
If the SMSF has a corporate trustee, the company is separate from the fund. If that company was used only as the SMSF trustee and is no longer required, the directors may need to consider whether the company should be deregistered with ASIC after the fund is finalized. Company deregistration is a separate process and should not be confused with closing the SMSF itself.
