Which company addresses does ASIC record?
ASIC requires a registered company to keep certain addresses current. The two core addresses are the registered office and the principal place of business. A company may also have a contact address, and companies that use a registered agent can have the agent’s address recorded for correspondence.
Registered office
The registered office is the address where official communications and documents can be sent to the company. ASIC requires it to be a physical street address in Australia and not a post office box. It does not have to be where the business actually operates.
A company can use another person’s premises, such as an accountant’s office, as its registered office. Where the company does not occupy the premises, ASIC requires the company to have the occupier’s written consent and to keep that consent with its records.
Principal place of business
The principal place of business is the main location where the company conducts business. ASIC also requires this to be a physical address rather than a post office box. It may be the same as the registered office, but it does not have to be.
Getting the distinction right ensures operational commercial correspondence arrives at trading premises while legal notices and ASIC statements arrive at the registered office.
When do you need to update company address ASIC details?
ASIC company information should be updated when the actual details change rather than waiting for the next annual review. ASIC guidance states that a company must generally update its details within 28 days of the change. Late lodgement fees can apply if the notification is made after the required timeframe.
If several details are changing together - for example, an address, director and shareholder information - our broader Company Changes service can help coordinate the separate updates.
What is involved in a registered office change Australia?
A registered office change is more than entering a new address. The company should first confirm that the new address satisfies ASIC requirements and, if the company does not occupy the premises, that consent to use the address has been obtained and retained. The effective date of the change should also be clear.
If the address belongs to an ASIC registered agent, the appointment of the agent and the company address arrangements should be consistent. Financially Up can also assist through our ASIC Registered Agent service where ongoing agent support is required.
Under the Corporations Act, if a company uses an external address (such as an accounting firm), written occupier consent must be signed and retained in company records prior to submitting Form 484 to ASIC.
Why accurate address records matter
ASIC uses company address information for official communication, and some address details are visible on the companies register. An outdated registered office can mean important notices are sent to a place the company no longer monitors. It can also complicate annual reviews and other company updates.
Address accuracy is particularly important around the ASIC Annual Review, because the annual statement is used to check the company details held on the register. However, the annual review is not a substitute for notifying changes when they occur.
How Financially Up can help
Our ASIC address change service can help company directors and business owners identify the correct address type, check the current company record and prepare the relevant update. We can also assist where a company has changed accountants, a former address is still appearing on the register, or more than one company in a group needs to be updated.
Information we may need
We may ask for the company name and ACN, current ASIC annual statement or company extract, the old and new addresses, the effective date of the change, and confirmation about whether the company occupies the proposed registered office. If the change is connected with appointing or ceasing a registered agent, we may also need the relevant agent details.
Why choose Financially Up
Financially Up supports company owners with ASIC administration as part of a broader accounting and compliance service. We are a registered tax agent with 10+ years of experience, and our team includes CPA and IPA members. Australia-wide support is available through online appointments, with in-person appointments also offered.
