What Is a Tax Return Amendment?
A tax return amendment is a request to change information in a return that has already been lodged and processed. It may be needed to correct an error, include omitted information or replace an amount when more accurate information becomes available.

Overdue or Unlodged Return
An amendment is different from an overdue return. An overdue or unlodged return has not yet been lodged, whereas an amendment corrects a return that has already been processed.
Formal ATO Objection
It is also different from an objection. An amendment generally corrects information originally provided in the return. An objection may be relevant where you disagree with an assessment or another objectionable ATO decision, or where the normal amendment period has expired.
When Should You Amend a Tax Return?
You may need to amend a tax return when the information originally lodged was incomplete or incorrect. Common examples include:
Before Requesting an Amendment
The original return should generally be processed before an amendment is requested. Check the notice of assessment, the lodged return and the records supporting the proposed correction.
The amount currently shown
Identifying the exact reported line item on the original lodged tax return and notice of assessment.
The correct total amount
Recalculating the revised figure using verified primary source documents and statements.
Why the original amount was incorrect
Formulating a clear, factual explanation of the omission, revised information, or calculation error.
The records supporting the correction
Assembling substantiating invoices, bank feeds, amended employer PAYG statements, or broker reports.
Systemic Impact: Why Full Return Review Is Essential
A change to one item can affect other calculations, including taxable income, tax offsets, the Medicare levy, study or training loan repayments, capital losses and other income-tested obligations. The complete affected return should therefore be reviewed rather than changing one figure in isolation.
What Happens After an Amendment
The ATO may accept the amendment, request further information or make a different decision based on the information available. If the amendment is processed, the ATO will generally issue an amended notice of assessment.
Can You Amend Previous Years?
There are time limits for requesting an amendment. Most individuals generally have two years from the day after the ATO gives the notice of assessment.
Sole Trader Statutory Windows
Sole traders generally had a two-year amendment period for 2023-24 and earlier income years. For 2024-25 and later income years, eligible sole traders and other qualifying business taxpayers may generally have four years to request an amendment. Different rules can apply, so the relevant income year, assessment date and circumstances should be checked.
Objections & Extension of Time
If the amendment period has expired, an objection may need to be considered. If the objection period has also expired, a request for an extension of time to object may be required. Availability and acceptance depend on the circumstances.
Common Tax Return Amendment Issues
Many amendments involve practical errors discovered after lodgment, such as an amended income statement, omitted interest, an incorrect work-related expense or a deduction that was not properly apportioned between business and private use.
