What is included in a BAS lodgement service?
The work typically starts with the records for the relevant period. Transactions are reviewed, GST coding is checked where applicable, key accounts are reconciled and the activity-statement figures are prepared for lodgement. If something does not make sense, it should be clarified before the BAS is submitted rather than guessed.
Reviewing sales and purchase information relevant to the BAS period
Examining total revenue, client billings, supplier invoices, and operating expenses allocated to the quarter or month.
Checking GST on taxable sales and eligible business purchases
Verifying standard 10% GST calculations, GST-free supplies, export transactions, and input taxed expense items.
Reviewing PAYG withholding or PAYG instalment labels where they apply
Confirming employee payroll withholding deductions (W1/W2) and company/individual income tax instalments (T7/1A).
Reconciling key figures back to the accounting records
Cross-referencing general ledger tax accounts, bank statements, and activity statement summary reports.
Identifying missing records, coding issues or unusual transactions
Flagging missing tax invoices, personal drawings incorrectly marked as expenses, or duplicate entries.
Preparing and lodging the BAS once the information is ready
Compiling formal ATO activity statement schedules and transmitting electronically via the secure tax agent portal.
When might you use BAS preparation services?
Businesses often seek BAS preparation services when transaction volumes increase, when they register for GST, when payroll creates additional reporting obligations, or when owners want an accountant to review the figures before lodgement. Support can also be useful when several periods are outstanding or when the bookkeeping needs correction before an activity statement can be completed.
Increasing Transaction Volumes
When business sales and purchase volume grow beyond manageable DIY bookkeeping capacity.
New GST Registrations
When crossing the compulsory $75,000 threshold and requiring structured quarterly or monthly GST accounting.
Payroll & Employer Obligations
When hiring team members and managing PAYG withholding reporting alongside Single Touch Payroll.
Professional Pre-Lodgement Review
When owners want qualified accountants to verify GST codes and figures before submitting to the ATO.
Multiple Overdue Periods
When backlogged or unlodged activity statements need sequential reconciliation and catch-up lodgement.
Bookkeeping File Adjustments
When accounting files contain ledger imbalances or coding errors that must be resolved prior to reporting.
What does a BAS commonly report?
The exact labels vary. For a GST-registered business, a BAS commonly includes sales and GST amounts. Depending on the business's registrations and circumstances, an activity statement may also include PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments and other tax obligations.
The reporting frequency may be monthly, quarterly or annual. Rather than relying on a generic calendar, businesses should check the activity statement issued by the ATO or their ATO account for the actual due date that applies.
- • Quarterly: Most standard small businesses
- • Monthly: Medium-to-large entities or monthly PAYG
- • Annually: Eligible voluntary GST registrants
Accurate records come before accurate BAS figures
A BAS is only as reliable as the records behind it. Bank reconciliations, sales records, supplier bills, tax invoices and payroll information may all affect the final figures. If the accounting file has duplicate transactions, unreconciled bank items or incorrect GST coding, the BAS may need additional review before it is ready to lodge.
Where the records themselves need ongoing attention, Financially Up's Bookkeeping services can be scoped separately. If you are not yet registered for GST and need help assessing or completing registration, see our GST Registration service.
Need Ongoing or Catch-Up Bookkeeping?
If day-to-day transactions need processing or bank accounts remain unreconciled, our structured bookkeeping services ensure your books are clean and ready.
What records should you have ready?
To prepare an accurate activity statement that satisfies ATO scrutiny and ensures you claim all eligible input tax credits, have the following records available for the reporting period:
Accounting software or transaction listings for the BAS period
Bank and credit-card statements where reconciliation is required
Sales invoices and income records
Supplier invoices and receipts, including valid tax invoices where required for GST credits
Payroll and PAYG withholding reports where relevant
Details of asset purchases, unusual transactions or prior-period adjustments that may affect the BAS
ATO correspondence or previously lodged BAS information if corrections are being considered
BAS lodgement for small business
A BAS accountant for small business should do more than transfer totals from software into a form. The purpose of professional review is to make sure the figures are supported by the records and that obvious inconsistencies are addressed before lodgement.
That does not mean every BAS requires complex tax advice. Straightforward preparation and lodgement can remain a defined compliance service. Where a transaction raises a separate GST interpretation, restructuring or tax-advice issue, Financially Upcan identify that and scope the additional work separately.
Defined Compliance Scope
Enjoy transparent fixed-scope activity statement preparation without paying for unsolicited complex tax advice, while keeping the security of an experienced registered tax agent reviewing your figures.
